About This Quote

Once, in my early twenties, I was struggling to find work. I had been out of the workforce for a few years, and my unemployment checks were being garnished by my ex-wife. I was in a rut in every way possible. My friends were all making money, but I couldn't.

I was also in a place that was making me unhappy. Every day when I woke up, the past seemed to weigh heavily on my mind. It felt like I was stuck in some sort of fog that just wouldn't lift no matter how hard I tried to get free.

I didn't want to go on like this, but it seemed like there was nothing I could do about it. Then one day near the end of February, while I was sitting at my house reading, something very unexpected happened. A man walks up to me and asks if he can speak with me privately.

This man wasn't someone you saw every single day; he wasn't wearing any kind of uniform or even any clothing that would identify him as part of this great city; he didn't even have an accent that would indicate where he came from. He looked like any other man walking the streets of New York City... except for one thing: this man had some serious money behind him.

He had more than enough money to hire people to do whatever he wanted done at all times of the day or night, and yet here he was standing directly in front of me on a cold winter's night, asking if he could speak with me alone for fifteen minutes. This is just one example of how our circumstances can be more than just chance events that happen to us on accident. No matter how bad things are for you right now, there will always be someone who has it worse off than you do who is willing to give you their time and be your friend just because they have been there before and know exactly what you're going through. This is another reason why we should never lose hope: no matter what happens today or tomorrow, there will always be someone else who feels exactly as hopeless as we do right now who will give us their time and help us anyway they can because they have been through the same exact thing we have been through before but still managed to move forward anyway...

so we can too!
